22 SEPTEMBER 2014

Chernet Valley Railway – Model Railway and Classic Car Event 2013

Club Outing: 19th May 2013
Our day started at Hobs Meadow where our coach arrived for a 09:00am departure. 25 members and guests boarded in fine weather which lasted all day. Our driver Ray took us to Kingsley & Froghall Station, seeing only shunter 08623 at Bescot on the way. We arrived at 10:45am where train tickets were purchased for the first departure of the day at 11:00am.

The service train for the day consisted of a B.R. Mark II and 4 Mark I coaches, the locomotive provided was LNER built Class N7 0-6-2T 69621. The train headed north west and first called at Consall and then on to Leek Brook Junction, where the 69621 ran round the train, and then returned to Cheddleton before returning to Kingsley & Froghall, this service was repeated throughout the day.

At Cheddleton we were able to visit locomotive workshop, yards and station where there was a small museum and model railways. There was plenty of time for photography and lunch before catching the train to Consall for more photos and close examination of rods and cables used to connect signal box to points and signals at each end of the station.

Returning to Kingsley & Froghall we visited the Classic Cars on display along with more model railways and a sales stand. We departed at 17.00pm arriving back at Hobs Meadow at 18:45pm, everyone having enjoyed the fine weather and a good day out.

The line itself runs along a surprisingly beautiful valley together with a river and canal. The railway was built in 1849 and joined Macclesfield and Uttoxeter. Passenger services ceased in 1965 and freight services were withdrawn in 1988. The preserved line was re-opened in 1996 and then to Caldon Low in 2012, this part being on the Moorland & City Railway. The future plans include reaching Stoke on Trent via Leek Brook Junction in the north and extending to Alton Towers via Oakamoor to the south.
