13 May 2011

Didcot Raiway Centre and Pendon Museum

Club Outing: 26th September 2010

We met outside the clubhouse for our 09.00 pick up by Silverline Coaches 37 seater. We went directly to Didcot Railway Centre and were dropped at Didcot railway station at 10.30. A short walk through the station took us to the entrance where our visit began.

Cardiff Railway/G.W.R. 0-4-0ST 1338 ran light engine to Didcot Halt where it worked the branch train to Burlescombe Transfer Shed coupled to an auto trailer. The Broad Gauge service from Burlescombe started a little later, slightly delayed by work being completed by a film crew. The service between Mainline Station and Oxford Road Station was worked by G.W.R. 2-6-0 5322 in WW1  R.O.D. livery and G.W.R. corridor coaches.

Members took time to take trips on all 3 trains and visited the engine shed, loco works, carriage and wagon workshop, museum and shop with plenty of time for photography and refreshmesnts.

We left promptly at 14.00 for Pendon Model Railway Museum, not forgetting to photograph Euroshed  66026 and departmental Sprinter 950001 at Didcot Parkway.

At Pendon  village we had a quarter of a mile walk  to the museum, since there was a restriction on coaches using the road. Again we had plenty of time for photography of the models built and demonstrated, and all our questions were answered by the museum guides. Use of the shop and refreshments was again made. We left Pendon at 16.15 and returned at 18.00 after a successful visit.
